Career In Auto Body Repair Technology

If you have traveled on the highway, you might have come across accidents involving two or more vehicles that have collided with each other. Such vehicles are either disposed of as scrap or sent for repairs, depending on the extent of damage caused by the crash. An automobile body repairer's job is to work on damaged cars, make modifications to improve appearance and lend it an entirely new look. A career in auto body repair technology can be fascinating if you have a flair for fixing things and an eye for the design of cars.

The following article will help you understand the distinguishing characteristics of a career in auto body repair technology.

Job Qualifications And Training

Companies that hire auto body repair technologists typically prefer candidates with prior training in the field. They supplement the knowledge of newly recruited technicians with a well defined, on-the-job training. Additionally, the technicians are expected to lay efforts on constant updating of their skills as new vehicles are introduced. It is advisable for them to spend personal time reading technical manuals, and attending seminars and classes.

The National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) offers a certification in repairs, which though a voluntary program is considered as a standard of achievement for automotive body repairers. The institute conducts four tests, twice a year. A work experience of two years is an essential criterion to qualify for the test.

Due to the rapid improvement in technology, vast differences exist in the make, spare parts, build and quality of material used by manufacturers in the production of cars. Therefore, in addition to the practical training provided by employers, new technicians are also encouraged to attend supplementary courses organized by various auto manufacturers.

Skills

To be a talented automotive body repairer, reading, arithmetic and computer skills are essential. To restore the body of an automobile, a repairer should be able to understand diagrams so that the correct positioning of a certain part can be measured with respect to the other parts. New repairers are expected to fix dents and other minor problems, after which they start working on more complex problems such as straightening and realignment of body parts.

Nature Of The Job

The different job opportunities in this field range from painting and glass replacement to specializing in only one type of repair. For instance, a technician can focus on fiberglass car body repair that is usually done only in bigger shops. Other jobs include fixing of large dents using anvils, heating of plastic to attach it back to the car, and the filing and grinding of machines to lend it a desired shape. After gaining a few years of experience, some auto body repairers also take up management jobs that involve tasks such as supervising technicians, purchasing of supplies, hiring, keeping track of income, expenses, and payment of bills.

Salary

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in the year 2002, automotive body repairers made a median hourly wage of $15.71 including incentives.

Future Of The Job

The number of job positions in this field is expected to increase through the year 2012. To meet the demand, auto body repair jobs may have to be contracted out to repairers from other fields or retired automobile designers working in other areas. Repairers who have undergone formal training and certification will benefit from the enriching job opportunities expected to arise. Other than simple repairing jobs, the redefining aspect of automobile technology will be a sought after skill to counter the increasing demands for new and innovative designs. The big shops will look at increasing their ability to provide quality service to more customers as a team is would be recruited to cater to the varying needs of different customer profiles, to decrease the repair time and improve overall efficiency.

As the number of vehicles on the road increase, so will the need to repair and add new features to them. The auto repairing industry is here to stay, and if you vie to be in an innovative and challenging field, the auto body repair industry is the right career option for you.

DIY Auto Body Repair - Good Idea Or No?

There's a sickening sound of metal on metal whenever someone hits your car that is unmistakable. The first thing you think of is: is everyone OK? The second thing you probably think of is: how much is this going to cost? Do-It-Yourself auto body repair is certainly a tempting thought, especially in these tough times, but is it really a good idea?

First of all, keep in mind that if you are not at fault chances are good that the other party's insurance will pay for any and all costs related to the accident, including: auto body repair, repainting, rental car, and so forth. Why do it yourself when you can easily have it done by a professional at no cost to you other than your time? A good auto body shop will thoroughly examine your car, draw up a preliminary estimate, and send the estimate off (with photographs) to the insurance company for you: easy.

Even if you have all kinds of experience in doing paint jobs, touching up scratches or banging out small dents, keep in mind that if you have been involved in a collision of any kind there is always the risk of damage to the undercarriage, frame, alignment, etc. Those kinds of repairs are best left to professionals who know what trouble signs to look for and what to do about them. Did you know that if your frame is not properly repaired following an accident, the consequences can be dire? If you were hit going 20 miles an hour the first time, the same type of accident again could result in even more damage and more severe injuries.

The bottom line is: DIY is great for oil changes, basic car maintenance, and even extremely minor repairs to a car's chassis. But it's worth a few bucks (if you were at fault) or a little bit of time (if someone else was at fault) to get the job done right the first time by your favorite Utah auto body specialist or a shop in the state where you live.

Auto Body Shop - Know The Best Occasions To Go To One

If you have never had occasion to use an auto body shop before, you might wonder why you would ever need one. However, there are various reasons to take your vehicle to a professional company in order to improve its appearance. Find out some possible reasons to visit such a business.

If you are planning on selling your car anytime soon, you want it to look in the best shape possible. A car in excellent condition can sell for a lot more than one in good or fair condition, and a great paint job can often bump it up into the next category. If your automobile has scratches and chips all over from regular wear and tear over the years, it is time to let a professional fix it up before you sell it. The higher price you will likely get for it is usually more than what you will pay to fix it at an auto body shop.

In some cases, you might choose to have a completely new paint job. This can be the best route for an automobile that has several scratches, especially if it is difficult to exactly match the color. You may instead opt for a completely new look, getting a different color paint to revitalize your car. This might be particularly attractive if you have had your vehicle for years since just because you liked a certain shade years ago does not mean you still like it.

If you have been in a car accident, either recently or in the past, it is important to get the damage fixed at a professional auto body shop. Driving an automobile that has major damage can be dangerous and may cause further destruction to the rest of the vehicle. Even if you only have a little damage, it is important to get it repaired as soon as possible. Not only is this safer, but you can be much prouder of a vehicle in great shape than one with dents and structural issues. This is true whether you plan to sell it or soon, or hold onto it as long as you can.
Clearly, heading to a reputable auto body shop can help anyone with a vehicle. Whether you want to sell your automobile soon, eventually, or never, you can still use the services of a professional to get it in the best shape possible. If you want to improve your car's appearance, check out the shops nearest you.

Side Collision Accidents

Side collisions are one of the most severe types of accidents that can occur. Also known more commonly as a "T-Bone" collision, this type of crash occurs when one vehicle strikes another vehicle along its side. While the accident can be harmful for both vehicles involved, typically the individual who is struck has a much higher chance of suffering from severe injuries and damages. Vehicles do not have the same amount of reinforcement on their sides as they do on the front and back bumpers. Therefore a person struck from the side by another vehicle is more likely to be seriously hurt.

How T-Bone Crashes Occur

A car accident can happen anywhere, in a variety of situations. However, they are most likely to occur at intersections, in which one driver disregards a stop or yield and strikes another vehicle or is struck by an oncoming vehicle. The fault may be with either the struck vehicle, for not yielding or stopping for cars with the right of way, or with the striking vehicle, which also may have disregarded an important traffic law and then hit the other car. The force of the impact from the side can cause the struck car to spin out of control or even to roll over, causing even more serious injury to the occupants or to other drivers or pedestrians nearby.

How Insurance Can Protect You

Clearly car insurance can not prevent an accident from occurring. It can, however, protect you in the event of an accident by covering the costs of your accident. If you are at fault for a side collision, your liability insurance will cover the cost of injuries and damages caused to the struck driver, other occupants, and the vehicle. It can also protect you from being sued by the injured party. If you are struck by an uninsured motorist who is found to be at fault, your uninsured motorist coverage will cover the costs of your injuries and damages.

When you are involved in a t-bone collision and no one can be found to be at fault, your collision coverage and medical expenses insurance will be used to compensate you for your recovery and repair costs. While it may seem unimportant to pay for car insurance each month, just one costly side collision can make years of paying for coverage well worth the investment.
