Four Common Reasons Your Car Might Need Auto Body Repair

Due to everyday wear and tear, it is no wonder that vehicles tend to get scratches and dings. Most cars spend the vast majority of time outside exposed to the elements. This exposure to the elements, along with other factors, can cause damage to the body of your vehicle. Thankfully, with today's technology, most auto body repair occurs rather quickly. Here are a few of the most common reasons your car might need repair.

1. Car Collisions

Travelling on the road can be a hazard, even if you are obeying all the rules. The sad truth is that even if you are moving at a slow speed, a collision can still cause serious damage to your vehicle. The most common damage from a collision is not the dents in the exterior of the car, but a bend in the frame. In the past, it was difficult to repair a bent frame, because it decreased the overall structural integrity. However, thanks to computer technology, straightening frames is more easily achievable.

2. Paint Scratches

There are many ways for your car to get scratches in the paint. Careless shoppers can bump your ride with their doors or even with a shopping cart. Keys and other sharp objects may be scraped against the side on accident. For some scratches, your auto body repair shop may be able to rub out the scuff. Bigger, deeper scrapes may require filler and paint.

3. Dents

Dents can happen several different ways. These issues can result from a minor collision with another object, from a pole to a fence to another car door. No matter how the damage occurred, dent removal is one of the most common tasks completed at an auto body repair shop. There are a couple ways to complete this task, depending on how much damage there is.

If the damage is from is a small ding with no paint removal, the technician may be able to tap it out from behind. If it is a larger area, however, the technician will need to drill a very small hole, insert a tool, and pull the damage out. The hole must then be filled in and repainted to match. However, if the damage is too severe, the technician will have no choice but to replace the entire panel and possibly paint it to match.

4. Weather Related

Since your car spends a lot of time outside, having weather-related damage is fairly common. While you might think of denting due to hail as the only damage you can receive from weather, it is far from the only problem.

Exposure to excessive sun can cause the vehicle's paint to fade. In this case, your vehicle will need to be sanded and repainted with factory-matched paint.

Excessive moisture over several years may cause rust to form. In this event, the technician will cut the spot away and replace it with new metal. This area will then be painted to match the rest of the car.

Auto body repair is very common. While you probably think you can handle most of these smaller repairs yourself, it is best to have a trained professional make the changes.
